Book Club Post # 4

"Speak"

Summary: In this weeks reading I finished reading the book "SPEAK" . I read that Melinda told her ex-friend Rachelle that that she was raped. They were in the school library, they were both almost kicked out for talking too much. Melinda was nervous to tell Rachelle that Andy Evans raped her because Andy was Rachelle's Boyfriend and Melinda wasn't sure if Rachelle was going to believe her. When Melinda told her that she was raped at the party the summer before Rachelle was shocked and Apologized for not realizing earlier what happened to her. Rachelle was asking her a lot of questions about what happened to her after she was raped, she was Concerned about her friend. But when Melinda told her that the person that had raped her was Andy Evans , Rachelle flipped, she didn't believe what Melinda was telling her anymore.
She said that Melinda was a liar , that she was jealous that about her being popular and going to the prom with Andy. After she said all of that she took off to the nurses office saying that she was going throw up. ( p.gs 180-184) The only person that would talk to Melinda that was one of her old friends is Ivy. They are in art class together. Ivy told her how she didn't like Andy Evans either and how great Rachelle thinks she is now that she's popular and dating a senior. She helped Melinda write on the bathroom stall that girls should stay away from Andy and how much of a creep he is.( p.gs 184-186) Melinda and her mother are both surprised when Heather comes over to talk to Melinda. Heather says that the Martha's are really mean to her and that she should have listened to Melinda and just have left the Martha's before. Heather then starts talking about how Melinda should help her decorate a Holiday Inn ballroom for the prom. Melinda doesn't say anything to her. Heather then starts talking about how they should redecorate her room. Melinda finally says no to her, she wont help Heather decorate for the prom and she won't let her do anything to her room. ( p.gs 176-180) The Monday after prom everybody was talking about it. People were saying how lame Heather's Decorations were , Melinda thinks that's why she didn't come to school. The thing that caught Melinda's attention most was that she heard that Rachel had ditched Andy at the prom and went to dance with her exchange student friends. While Melinda was removing her things from her janitors closet Andy Evans walks in and locks them inside. He started saying that it was Melinda's fault that Rachel dumped him at the prom saying that he had raped Melinda. Andy is trying to hurt Melinda again, she struggles but when she tries to scream nothing comes out. Finally when she remembers what he did to her when he raped her , how his hands felt on her she screamed and pushed Andy off of her. He punches her hard on her head and she screams again. Melinda tries to find something to hit him with , she hits him with her fists but she thinks " My fists mean nothing to him , little rabbit paws thumping harmlessly". Melinda picks up a block of wood and hits it against her Maya Angelou poster to brake the mirrors behind it. When it finally brakes she picks up a piece of it and hold it to Andy's neck. She presses hard enough that blood drips out. Again while holding the piece of the broken mirror she tells him no. Then Melinda's old friend Nicole and the lacrosse team are at the door and somebody runs off to get help.(p.gs 190-195)

It's the last day of school and Melinda stayed after school to finish her tree project for Mr.Freeman. Melinda draws new things on her tree and in the end Mr.Freeman gave her a 'A+' for her drawing.Melinda admits that Andy raped her at the party the summer before the start of high school. She said that she was drunk and too young to know what was happening and that it wasn't her fault. Andy hurt her and it wasn't her fault. Now shes not going to let that experience kill her and that she can now grow. ( p.gs 196-198)

Opinion: I really liked reading this book and I'm glad that I choose it as my book club reading book. I think that its good that Melinda finally told somebody what Andy Evans did to her but I'm not too happy about Rachel's reaction. I think that if the people that Melinda thought were her friends were really her friends then they wouldn't have ditched her like they did and ignore her through out the first year of high school. If I had a friend that was going through what Melinda was going through i won't leave her , I wouldn't ignore her like Melinda's friend's did to her. I think that it was stupid to just treat Melinda like they did just because she called the police, They should have asked her why she called the cops and not just do that to her!!!!
The only person that talked to Melinda and didn't ignore her was Ivy, Melinda and Ivy weren't even that good of friends before but even though Ivy didn't do her wrong like the other girls.
I personally didn't like Heather from the start ( I really don't know why I didn't like her) but it was nice of her to be Melinda's friend.Then when she started hanging out with the Marthas' everything changed and in the end Heather said to Melinda that she couldn't be her friend because she was too depressed and that she needed to get help. Now after all that happened Heather comes back and asks Melinda for help.She also said that the Marthas' were being mean to her and bossing her around. I think that Heather deserved what she got because Melinda was being a good friend to her and even when she started hanging out with the Marthas' Melinda was there helping her out.I'm glad that Melinda stood up to her because she was being a real snob. I'm so glad that everybody now knows what Andy did to Melinda! He's a beast just like Melinda said that he is! When I was reading the part where he snuck up on her in the closet my eye's were like this O_O.....because I thought he was going to try and rape her again...which he did try to do! I got mad because he was saying mean things to her and hitting her and she wasn't doing anything.....but then when he started touching her she screamed and told him to stop ...that she didn't want him touching her. But then things got worse when he punched her =[ ..she was fighting back but it was as if she wasn't hitting him at all. I think that Melinda was lucky that there was a mirror behind her poster because if it wasn't there then she wouldn't have broken it and saved herself from Andy. It was the last day of school and Melinda stayed to finish her art project. She worked really hard on it and she was finally able to put her feelings into the tree just like Mr.Freeman said to do. I really feel like she deserved the grade she got on her project.... A+ ^_^.

Prompt: What was the best thing about this week's reading? The best thing about this weeks reading was that I was finally able to finish my book club reading book and I was able to finally see how everybody reacted when they found out why Melinda had really called the police on the night of the party. What surprised you about this week's reading ? What surprised me the most in this weeks reading was that Melinda actually fought back against Andy. I know Melinda is a strong person having kept her secret and having people mistreat her during her first year in High School but I didn't think she would be able to fight of Andy. When he raped her, she couldn't do anything because he was stronger than her. But this time she actually spoke up ,told him to stop and fought back. Did the ending surprise you? The ending didn't really surprise me that much because I was kinda of expecting it to end like it did. Would you recommend this book to anyone? Yes , I would recommend this book to people because "Speak" is a great book and I'm sure that anybody that reads this book will say the same thing. The book is a very interesting book and some people can even relate to it. I really liked this book and I hope that anybody else that reads it will enjoy it as much as I did .

Book club post # 3

Summary: This week in my book club book I read that Melinda has been improving in her classes, she has passed a lot of her tests. During Easter Melinda remembered how much fun it was when her mother hid colored eggs around the house for her , and when her grandparents died they would go to church during Easter. Melinda wished that she and her parents had gone to church for Easter this year because she missed the Easter songs that they sang. During spring break Melinda says that she feels like her house is shrinking and that she feels like Alice in Wonderland. She goes to the mall and she sees her old friend Ivy drawing a picture of children who's faces are sad on one side and painted like a clown on the other. Ivy asked Melinda how her tree was going and Melinda says that she still can't draw the tree right. Ivy tells Melinda that it doesn't matter if the tree she draws at first isn't good enough she can keep on trying until she gets it right. In biology Melinda's class has started to learn about genetics. During class Melinda was thinking about the things that she inherited from her parents. Lately Melinda has been seeing her old friend Rachelle with Andy Evans. Melinda is having a hard time deciding whether to tell Rachelle how Andy really is and what he did to her because they have been getting really close and Melinda doesn't want her old friend to get hurt. Even though Rachelle doesn't talk to Melinda and is probably still mad at her for calling the cops at the summer party , Melinda doesn't want what happened to her to happen to her friend.Melinda writes a left handed note ( so they won't know it was her) to Rachelle advising her and her new friend Ingrid to stay away from Andy Evans.

Opinion: I think that its good that Melinda has Ivy to help her with her tree because at least now she has a 'friend' to show her and tell her what she can do with her tree. I that it's a good thing that Melinda is looking out for her old friend even though Rachelle doesn't know that she's doing it. I think that it was a good idea to write Rachelle the letter because then even if she doesn't pay much attention to it she could still know what kind of person Andy really is.

Prompt: One question that the Deep Thinker asked this week was " Why doesn't Melinda tell Ivy what really happened to her at the party?" We also discussed our favorite characters from the book and why we liked them. My favorite character form the book is Melinda because she is a strong person and a good friend even though almost like all of her friends left her.She went through the first year of high school with no friends and keeping her secret. What surprised me this week was that Melinda actually had the courage to tell somebody about Andy even if it was only by a letter. She's scared of him because she thinks that hes going to hurt her again but she doesn't want anybody else to get hurt by him. The role I played this week was the Historian. I kept track of the imporatn events that happened in the book.

Book Club Post # 2

My Book Club Book :
SPEAK by:Laurie Halse Anderson

Summary: In this weeks reading I read that Heather , Melinda's only friend in school, has turned her back on her. Heather decided that she can't hang out with Melinda because she's depressed and too weird , so she went to the Martha's clan and left Melinda to be all by herself again ( p.gs 104-107) Melinda has been skipping school and people started to notice, so her parents had to have a meeting with the principal. The punishment she got was that she had to go to school everyday, she couldn't be late to her classes and that she had to do all her homework. If she didn't all that the only thing that she had to do was write an essay but she skipped school again and had to go to In-school suspension. While she was having her suspension with Mr.Neck ( The Social Studies Teacher ) Andy Evans walked into the room , every time Mr.Neck would turn around he would blow in Melinda's ear ( p.gs 113-118)
Melinda is having trouble with drawing her tree so Mr.Freeman gives her a book called
'Picasso' to inspire her. At first she thinks that the book has a lot of naked women but then she starts to get more into the book and at the end she drew a tree for Mr.Freeman ( Its still not the tree he wants though) ( p.gs 118-119) For a whole week Melinda didn't skip school , went to all of her classes and did all her home work , so she and her mother were going to go shopping to buy her new clothes. But when Melinda left school there was a blizzard outside and she was just standing out in the cold with no hat , mittens and with her rear end freezing. Mr.Freeman then offers Melinda a ride home in his car. They start talking about Melinda's tree and how she doesn't seem to put any of her feelings into the drawing. Melinda then shocks herself when she tells Mr.Freeman : " All right , but you said we had to put emotion into our art. I don't know what that means. I don't know what I'm supposed to feel" . Mr.Freeman then explains to her why a drawing should have feelings put into it and then he drops her off at home. (p.gs 120-123)


Opinion: I think that Melinda should really tell somebody about her problem and what happened to her but she doesn't speak to anybody. When people talk to her , some times she doesn't even answer them so they think shes mute or that shes being disrespectful to them. Mr.Neck doesn't like Melinda because he thinks that she doesn't talk because she's a quiet trouble maker. I don't really like Mr.neck because HE'S the one thats disrespectful to other people and he can't tell when somethings wrong with a person. I think that when Melinda finally tells somebody what happened to her , she will be able to draw a tree thats filled with all of her emotions.

Prompt:

This week my group was suppose to have a meeting but we didn't because I'm ahead of my other book club members and Sakeena ( One of my book club members ) was absent.

I had a meeting with Mrs.Hameed about my book.

In the book club meeting two things that we both agreed on was that the movie "SPEAK" and the book are very different. The movie is not as detailed as the book. The next thing that we agreed on was that When Melinda had to draw a tree in art class, she has to express her feelings and put it into the drawing but she can't because of the Issues she's going through.Two things that i disagreed with my book club group was that the main character's name was Heather ( O_o ) and that Melinda is mean to her mother.

I really liked talking to Mrs.Hameed about my book , even though she hasn't read it.She saw the movie so that helped her understand of parts of the book. I was able to tell her the things in the book that have been happening and the things that Melinda is going through. We compared things that happened in the movie to whats happening in the book. I feel that even though Mrs.Hameed hasn't read the book she now has a better understanding of how the book is and whats been happening to Melinda and the troubles shes having. I hope that the next time that the book club groups have a meeting that my group in complete and everybody is closer to being on the same page (that may take a while :[ ). I try to help my club members as much as I can without giving them to much information and to get them to have a better understanding of the book. Even though they do get on my nerves and make me want to rip all my hair out , I can't give up on them because i have to keep them from falling to far behind and help them with things that they don't understand about the book.

How do you feel about your first book club book? What have you liked most about it so far? What do you think is going to happen over the next week's reading?

I really like my book club book. The thing I like most about my book is that it is given from a persons own point of view and as I read the book I learn a lot more about Melinda and what she's going through at home and at school. Over the next week of reading I think that I will find out why Melinda is so quiet , why at the beginning of the book everybody was glaring at her and why she calls her self an outcast. ( Even if I did see the movie :p , I still wanna see what they're gonna say in the book )

Book Club Book: SPEAK by:Laurie Halse Anderson

Summary: My book is about a High School girl named Melinda Sordino. It's Melinda's first year in High School and she's a Social Outcast. She has no friends and is almost always depressed. The first day of High School everywhere she looked, her old classmates and ex-friends were glaring at her, Except the new girl from out off state named Heather. At first Melinda didn't like her every much by then she got used to having Heather around . When she walks to her classes people bump her in the hallways and drop her books. Then the mysterious "IT" shows up at school and melinda can't stand to have him around her. Melinda's grades are bad , her parents keep fighting and when people talk to her she almost never talks back to them or she just doesn't talk at all.

Opinion: Usually when I go to the library and see this book I don't pay much attention to it. When we were picking which book we wanted to read for our book clubs I had wanted to read a different book but then a teacher (Mr.Homan) asked me if I had read the blurb of the book "SPEAK" , I said no and he said that i should because it was an Interesting book and I would probably like it.When I finished reading the blurb I knew that "SPEAK" was the book that I wanted to read for book clubs. I really like reading this book ,( i even saw the movie thats based on the book :D ) the book is written in Melinda's point of view and it tell us what she feel as she enters High School , what she goes through at school and at home .Even though I already saw the movie "SPEAK" , I want to finish reading the book because I want to see what happens to Melinda in the book that didn't happen in the movie. When I read the book I never want to put it down ,I get so caught up in reading that sometimes I don't hear my teacher say that its time to stop reading.

Prompt:How do you feel about this new unit of Study? How did your book Club group perform this week? What role did you get the chance to play this week and how did that go for you? Tell me at least two new words that you learned this week as you read your book.

I love this new unit of study! I like this unit of study because I like to read , when ever I see a book that I'm intresrted in I always pick it up and read it. Also my class did book clubs last year and it was great! But there were only 2 people in my book club and we are both fast readers so by the time that unit ended , we had already read about 3 books. I think that my book club preformed good this week but we need to come together and talk more about our book. Also My other classmate and I are both very much ahead of our other classmates who are in our book club. When we have to talk about our book to the our other book club members I always talk to my friends sakeena because she is already up to page: 126 even though I'm only up to page:95.
She's always careful not to tell me too much of what shes read so that I can read it myself.My other book club members talk to each other because they are they are both up to the same page and sometimes they ask us questions if they don't understand something thats happened in the book . This week our class was learning how to be the Deep Thinker and the Historian. I think that I did better as the Histirion because I was able to fill the worksheet the Ms.Hameed gave us and I understood what I was doing. I wasn't every good at being the Deep Thinker because I wasn't able to put down my book and fill in the sheet, everytime I tried to stop and fill in the sheet something intresting kept happening in the book. I kinda forgot what the new words I learned were but Im going to look them up . =D

Blog Reflection....post #12

When this Unit first started i didn't like it very much. Everytime i chose a topic , i ended up not liking it and changing it. I think i changed my topic about 5 times :P.

I wasn't sure if people were going to like my work.

I was really confused and and was really behind on my blogging, untill one of my friends suggested that i blogged about anime or manga , which im know alot about. So i finally did pick my topic and i was really good at writing about it. Blogging about something that i really liked helped me understand what i should have been doing from the start of this unit.

The thing i liked about blogging was that is that i found it really fun to research about my topic.

I really like looking up things about anime and manga because i learned things about that i didn't know before. The thing that sometimes annoys me about blogging , is that sometimes i get the blogs messed up and i write something or put a picture in the wrong post and i have to do it over again on the right post.

I learn a lot of things while i was blogging. If i wasn't learning something about my topic, i was learning something new about posting things on my blog. Like putting Hyper-links and pictures to give examples of my work. I also learned how to write better summary's of my work , which helped alot. :D

I'm glad that this unit finished , but i'm also kinda sad that it did because now i can't look at anime and manga without getting introuble during class :p. Even though i was nervous at the beginning of the unit i ended up liking it and with the positive comments people gave me , i was able to write more ^_^ .

Post # 11......Bowling Trip

My class and other 8th grade classes went to a bowling alley ,It was really fun . Everybody had a lane and two teams to play.
The people on my team were Julyanna , Jacqueline and Reneida.
The people on the other team were Destiny, Jahomi ,Yanera and Francy.
We played 2 rounds and in both rounds the other team had more points then us :(.
But that didn't matter , as long as we were having fun we didn't care who won :D.
When we left the bowling alley , we all went to Mc Donalds and ordered a bunch of food!
We were all hungry after playing and taking pictures and all the crazy stuff we did ! :D
Almost all the people that came on the trip had to walk back to the school, it was hot and our feet hurt . I got hungry again even after i ate 3 snackraps , mediam fries and a small soda.
Well other than all that stuff, the trip was really fun :D
I would really like to have more trips like that :)

Post # 10 Math Test Reflection

Today was the state math test. When i woke up today i didn't really want to get out of bed, i was so nervous. Math isn't really my best subject so i was wasn't sure if i was going to well on the test.

Summary: When i walked into my class room, my teachers were giving out breakfast to my classmates. It's really nice of them to do that for us when we have a state test :) . I took the test in room 237 , with my math teacher Ms.heiser. She's a great teacher and she taught us verything that we needed to know for the test but i wasn't sure if i was going to remember everything.

Book 1 was the easiest form all 3 books. It was Multiple choise questions and i think that i did really good on that.

I was extra nervous on day 2 because i knew that the questions were going to be harder and we needed to show our work for the problems that we had to answer.

I was SO glad when the test were over and so was everybody else. Thank you Ms.heiser for teaching my class even though sometimes we can be a bunch of knuckle heads :p

Point of view

Summary: In an artical i found about anime it shows you the different types of anime genres and what they mean . In the Article it explains what the different genres are and the different styles in anime.

Opinion- I like all the different genres of anime and all of the different styles that they have.

Though there are some genres that i like more than others because one may be more intersting than the other or one could just be more entertaining , while the other one is kind of boring. I always try to watch as many different types animes as i can to see which ones i like more and which ones don't intrest me.

Prompt-How can we tell the authors point of view when reading an online media source?

In the article the authors point of view was good because the author tells what all the genres are and what they all mean.

Article:

Why do people like Anime?

Summary: All people that watch Anime usually have one thing in common :a desire for a fantasy world different from their own. People like Anime because it is different from normal cartoons.
Instead of watching a idiot boy , a cold heartless girl and a grim riper take mindless adventures, people would rather watch a boy on an adventure trying to reach his dream , a magical girl trying to save the world and a group of teenagers tying to make it through life.

Opinion: I think people like anime because its entertaining , fun to watch, and anime fans like it because anime is very dramatic and you never know whats going to happen next. I've been watching anime since I was a little kid. So I think that Its really fun to watch and very Entertaining . Sometimes an anime can be very boring and Sometimes it can be very funny . I like watching the funny ones because the boring ones put me to sleep.

Author's Purpose

Today while i was reading some of my favorite mangas' , i was thinking to myself : Why is it that people draw Manga?

It isn't exactly an article and its kinda old but it has great information. ^_^

summary: While i was reading, i found out that the reason most artist start drawing Manga is because they like reading manga. The artists find that drawing very enjoyable and that it keeps their imagination from exploding :p . They get their ideas from reading other mangas but they always make up their own characters , plots , they all have different styles.

Opinion- I wish i was able to draw manga , but sadly i can't :'( .

But still every time i read a new manga i see all the different ways that people draw their comics.

Every manga is different. Even if it comes from the same person, there are always things that are different and unique about every Manga that others don't have.

In the "article" i read , the writers purpose was to inform people why they like to draw Manga and what they like about it.

Language/Image

Article: The Face of the Other

I was looking at random stuff about manga and while i was looking ,one particular article caught my interest. The name of the article is "The Face of the Other" by:Matt Thorn. It was written to answer a question that many people were asking about Manga. The question was :“Why do all the characters look Caucasian?”

Summary:In the article it said that people were asking why do all manga characters look Caucasian. The writer of this article had asked people if they really thought that the characters really do look caucasia, and their only answer was that they look more caucasian then asian. Matt Thorn was trying to explain to people that even if the manga character has straight hair or round eyes they're not actually caucasian. Matt Thorn also said that japanese people aren't actually trying to make the characters' look caucasian, its just how the characters look. AND if they were making a character caucasin, the manga artist would make their clothing different, their names and their customs.

Opinion: I don't really know why some people think that Manga characters' look caucasian , i mean,i know when i see a caucasan character in a Manga because they look different than the regular japanese characters' .But maybe i only think that because im just use to seeing japanese characters and not caucasian characters in mangas'.Just because a character has different colored hair from everybody else doesn't really mean that are from a different place or nationality. The japanese character could have dyed their hair or they could have a japanese parent and a parent from another country , or the artist just wanted to make that character unique.

Prompt:How does the author of this article use language to evoke images and feelings in the reader?

I think that the author tries to evoke images in your mind by writing what he really thinks about the issue. He explains how a character would look if they came from a different country in the Manga or if they just looked different from everybody else. While i was reading i could really see what he was explaining in his article.

I say: You should learn from your mistakes so that they don't happen again so that you don't have to face the same consequences again.

And so: Even though everybody makes mistakes you should learn from them so that they don't happen again.

(I know this picture is kinda lame but it shows narutos mistake and the

consequences of it. So i guess he shouldn't be having knifes in his mouth if he doesn't want this to happen again :p )

Compare and contrast: Japanese comics and American comics

I went to two different sites and asked the same question : How are Japanese comic books and American comic books different?

Contrast:

Japanese comic books are read from right to left , which is unusual but it depends on what tpye of comic it is because some of them can also be read from left to right. Like a normal book.

Japanese comics are almost always black and white but it depends on how the artist wants the manga to be: black and white or colored. Sometimes its hard for people to understand how to read manga because of the way that you have to read but the comic usually has a page where it tells you how to read it and why the comic is different from regular comic books.

American comic books : I know this may sound weird but i think that American comic books are more difficult to read than Japanese comic books, or maybe its cuz i dont know what to write right now about american comic books even though i did read an article about it :p . Well American comic books have adverisments , they're colored and you always read them from left to right. While American comic books have names that almost always give you the exact idea of what it is about , Japanese comic books leave you wanting to know more about them and wanting to know why the creater gave it such a name. Some examples of that are : D.N.Angel , Boys over Flowers, Death note, Bleach, Fairy cube ...etc.

Compare:

Both are comic books of course, People enjoy reading them, they're entertaining and sometimes Tv series are made that are based off the comic books.

Manga or Anime?

I was looking on the internet today trying to find out which people liked best: Anime or Manga.
Prediction: I think that people will like both Anime and Manga because they are both very intresting and alot of people like to watch anime and read manga.


When people liked Anime they said that they liked it because its animated and colored , you can hear the characters voices and they just really like it, also some of them said that they prefer to watch the Anime than read the Manga.

For Manga, people said that they liked it because some mangas are more in depth than animes.


Opinion: I personally like them both because if there wasn't any Manga then there wouldn't be any Anime bacause Anime is usually based of Manga and i've been watching anime and reading manga since i was a little kid, so i like them both equally.

My prediction was almost right, alot of people like either anime or manga or both.

Anime: Is the Japanese word animation , it originated from Manga. Anime is usually hand draw but over the years people have started to draw Anime with computer assistance.
